Anda pasti sudah paham bahwa sistem operasi Windows (baik XP mau pun Vista)
yang di-instal di komputer biasanya sudah dilengkapi library font yang cukup banyak. Tetapi sering kali ketika anda memerlukan font-font spesifik untuk melengkapi desain website anda, ternyata font
yang terinstal di komputer kita tersebut ternyata tidak dapat memenuhi keinginan tersebut. Untuk itu, tentu saja anda harus menginstal font-font baru yang diperlukan tersebut. Menariknya, anda
bisa mendapatkan font-font baru tersebut cukup dengan menjelajah dunia maya (internet). Di internet pada kenyataannya terdapat begitu banyak sumber font yang dapat anda download baik secara berbayar
(untuk share font) atau gratis (free font). Nah, pada artikel ini saya akan infokan 12 jenis free font menarik yang mungkin sesuai dengan kebutuhan anda, yang saya lengkapi juga dengan link sumbernya.
Pada setiap link sumber ini, anda bisa temukan puluhan bahkan mungkin ratusan font lainnya yang tentunya juga dapat anda download. Namun sebelum itu, coba pelajari dulu tip saya mengenai cara-cara
menginstal file font ke komputer anda.
Format font yang umum digunakan untuk komputer dengan sistem operasi Windows ada banyak, namun pada artikel
ini saya hanya membahas yang paling banyak digunakan saja, yaitu font dengan format True Type dan Open Type. Ekstensi file True Type dinyatakan dengan “.ttf” , sedangkang Open Type
dengan “.otf” atau “.ttf”.
Sekarang saya uraikan langkah-langkah untuk men-download file font dari link-link yang akan saya infokan dan bagaimana meng-instalnya di komputer anda. Namun sebelumnya, coba anda cek dulu ke folder tempat penempatan font-font yang telah ada di komputer anda, yaitu di C:\WINDOWS\Fonts (lihat screenshot) untuk memastikan bahwa font yang anda inginkan memang belum ada di sana. File-file font yang akan anda download, nantinya juga harus ditempatkan di folder ini.
Ok, sekarang kita coba langkah-langkahnya, ya :
- Lakukan download file font dari link yang anda inginkan, biasanya file yang di download dikemas dalam format .zip, kemudian simpan file zip tersebut di suatu folder sementara.
Contoh:
Saya download font Christopherhand dari http://www.dafont.com/christopherhand.font , dimana file yang saya download tersebut adalah file christopherhand.zip yang berisi file “comesinhandy.ttf“. - Selanjutnya, dengan menggunakan program WinZip (WinRAR), extract file christopherhand.zip tersebut dan hasilnya (berupa file dengan ekstensi .ttf atau .otf ) tempatkan di folder sementara tersebut.
- Selanjutnya, Copy file tersebut dan Paste ke folder C:\WINDOWS\Fonts. Sesaat setelah anda klik “Paste”, akan muncul box pop up “Install Font Progress” yang menandakan proses instalasi file font sedang berlangsung. Box pop up tersebut akan hilang setelah proses instal selesai.
- Untuk memastikan hasilnya, silahkan cek di folder tersebut, jika sudah muncul seperti diperlihatkan pada screenshot berikut :
Maka proses instal telah selesai dan anda sudah dapat menggunakan font Christopherhand tersebut.
Ada 2 cara yang biasa digunakan, yaitu :
Cara 1 :- Explore folder tempat anda menyimpan file font yang telah di-download
- Pilih dan klik tombol kanan mouse anda pada file font yang ingin di-instal sehingga keluar menu pop up seperti pada screen shot berikut :
- Klik “Install”, dan akan keluar menu pop up UAC (user account control) yang meminta konfirmasi “acceptance” kepada anda.
- Klik saja tombol “Continue” dan selesailah sudah prosesnya.
- Masuk ke folder Control Panel --> Fonts , kemudian klik kanan di sembarang titik di area layer Fonts tersebut sampai keluar menu pop up seperti pada screenshot. Klik Install New Font...
- Navigasi ke folder tempat menyimpan file-file font yang telah anda download, yaitu dengan menu drop down pada “Drives dan “Folders.
- Jika sudah benar, akan keluar “List of Fonts" yang sesuai dengan file-file font yang anda maksud. Klik kanan pada file font yang anda ingin instal (pada contoh di screenshot, saya meng-klik file font “Kingthings Bloone! ”). Jangan lupa contreng box “Copy fonts to Fonts folder".
- Kemudian klik tombol “Install dan selesailah sudah prosesnya.

Jangan lupa, baik untuk cara 1 atau 2, setelah proses selesai anda harus cek ke C:\WINDOWS\Fonts, untuk memastikan file font yang anda instal sudah terdapat di sana.

- If you want to use it personally (print a t-shirt, use it on your own webpage…) – feel free to do so.

I've played a bit with the ever-popular "stressed" approach to making a font, where you take a traditional typeface of some kind and make it
look like it's been printed, scratched, faded, bloated, crumpled, discarded, abused and so on . . . and I've done a lot of hand-drawn, playful
fonts, too. When I sat down to draw Skuntch, I was doing the latter in the mood for the former, so I got messy with a calligraphy marker! Fun freeware.
